Excessive Standing With Standing Desks

Despite the fact that sitting for prolonged periods of time is not always good for the health of the feet, neither is uninterrupted standing. Individuals who use standing desks at the office ought to take note of this principle, as standing desks encourage individuals to stand still on their feet for prolonged periods of time. Doing so can exert excess pressure on the feet and facilitate stiffness in the muscles of the feet. All of this can make the onset of foot conditions such as plantar fasciitis more likely. If you are someone that uses a standing desk at the office, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist today to learn more about how to care for your feet in addition to receiving any treatment you may need.

While working on the feet, it is important to take the proper care of them. For more information about working on your feet, contact Harris Greenberger, DPM from Fairfield County Foot Surgeons. Our podiatrist will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Working on Your Feet

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

With a little bit of this information and knowing more about foot health, you will notice changes. Foot stretches and proper footwear will help with pain and prevent further issues.

How Do I Use a Foot Roller?

An important part of everyday foot care is knowing how to properly stretch out the feet. One important way that someone might go about stretching out the bottom of their feet, or arch, is by utilizing a foot roller. A foot roller can be used in a seated position. When sitting down, place the foot roller underneath one foot at a time. Then, slowly and gently roll the roller underneath the arch of the foot back and forth. By using a foot roller, an individual can gently stretch out the plantar fascia of the foot. You will then be able to combat the onset of conditions like plantar fasciitis. One might use a foot roller everyday as part of their everyday foot care. If you are someone that wants to learn more about foot rollers, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist today.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact Harris Greenberger, DPM from Fairfield County Foot Surgeons. Our podiatrist can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

Arthritis of the Big Toe

Osteoarthritis, or OA, can affect the base of the big toe and cause significant pain. This type of arthritis occurs when joints wear down, and bones become exposed and rub against each other. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and a limited range of motion. Walking may become difficult, and neuropathy can develop as OA of the big toe worsens. As with many other foot conditions, pain with big toe arthritis is often worse after periods of inactivity. Sometimes a reactive bone process can happen with OA, where the body will attempt to repair itself by growing more bone. Bony protrusions, called spurs, can then grow on the joint, which heightens pain, causes the toe to stiffen, and can lead to a visible bump or callus on the toe. If you suffer from OA of the big toe, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist, who can provide options for relief.

Toe pain can disrupt your daily activities. If you have any concerns, contact Harris Greenberger, DPM of Fairfield County Foot Surgeons. Our podiatrist can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Dealing With Corns on the Feet

Corns on the feet are the result of continued pressure on the skin that causes it to thicken. The major culprit in the formation of a foot corn is improperly fitting shoes. A corn is most likely to form on the outside of the pinky toe, between the toes, or on the sole of the foot. If a nerve is pressured, or if the corn rubs against a bone, it may become painful. Other causes of corns are seams in a shoe that rub against the toe, having hammertoes or bunions, and having an abnormal gait. Changing footwear is the first way you can reduce the risk of developing corns on the feet. It is helpful to avoid shoes with a narrow and low toe box, wear socks that resist moisture, in addition to finding shoes that made of more flexible materials. Special pads that protect the area of the corn from friction are helpful in reducing pain and relieving pressure. Removing the corn is another treatment method, but it is best left to a podiatrist. If you have a particularly painful corn on the foot, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist who can determine what the best treatment method is for you.

If you have any concerns regarding your feet and ankles, contact Harris Greenberger, DPM of Fairfield County Foot Surgeons. Our podiatrist will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Why Do Blisters Develop?

Many people enjoy walking and may be concerned about blisters developing on their feet. Blisters produce pain and discomfort and may also cause the gait, or walking style, to change. Blisters are often caused by excess friction due to the shoes and socks that are worn. A common place they develop is on the back of the heel as the foot rubs against the shoe. With enough friction, a bubble forms that is filled with a protective liquid to protect the damaged skin. The bubble will gradually drain as new skin forms under it, and a bandage may be worn to help prevent it from popping prematurely. There may be existing medical conditions, like psoriasis and eczema, that can cause a blister to form. Frostbite, extreme sunburn, or an allergic reaction to an insect bite may also result in a blister. If you would like to learn about effective blister prevention methods, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can provide you with the information you are seeking.

Blisters are prone to making everyday activities extremely uncomfortable. If your feet are hurting, contact Harris Greenberger, DPM of Fairfield County Foot Surgeons. Our podiatrist can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters develop as a result of constantly wearing tight or ill-fitting footwear. This happens due to the constant rubbing from the shoe, which can often lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

How Do Blisters Form?

Blisters on the feet are often the result of constant friction of skin and material, usually by shoe rubbing. Walking in sandals, boots, or shoes that don’t fit properly for long periods of time can result in a blister. Having consistent foot moisture and humidity can easily lead to blister formation.

Prevention & Treatment

It is important to properly care for the affected area in order to prevent infection and ease the pain. Do not lance the blister and use a Band-Aid to provide pain relief. Also, be sure to keep your feet dry and wear proper fitting shoes. If you see blood or pus in a blister, seek assistance from a podiatrist.
